A manatee was reported Wednesday afternoon in the Garden City Beach area, between Seabreeze and Vista drives, but when officials return to the area Thursday they did not find it, said Jennifer Koches with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
“We’re not really sure if it managed to work its way out and head back down the creek,” Koches said. “If it has gotten back out and is working its way back down the creek, the best thing we can do is urge people to use caution.”

She said people who encounter the docile mammals should not be concerned because they pose no threats to humans.
A manatee was reported in Myrtle Beach Aug. 3 near the shore at 31st Avenue North before it swam back into deeper waters, according to authorities.
